L’ÉPILOGUE

haul gallery presents L’ÉPILOGUE, a solo exhibition by the artist Marvin Touré, the artist’s second with the gallery. The show operates in tandem with À BIENTÔT: meditations on loss in space, a literary project published by Touré earlier this year. Forty-five small circular drawings line the black gallery walls, hung low initiating an intimate and otherworldly viewing experience. The white brick of an adjacent wall seems to continue to the floor, where white faux brick flooring has been installed, sharply contrasting with the rest of the space. À BIENTÔT: meditations on loss in space, released on January 1st, 2021, was the second self-published literary project by Marvin Touré. The story follows space cartographer “Tun” on a mission to map the stars. We follow this voyage through capsules of dialogue between our protagonist and the Psychological Evaluation Robotic Assistant referred to as “P.E.R.A.” The exhibition L’ÉPILOGUE presents forty-five of the fifty-two original “star map” paintings illustrated in À BIENTÔT: meditations on loss in space.

Marvin Touré (b.1991) is an Ivorian-American artist who uses fictional narratives and the objects of innocence as a vehicle to interrogate themes of love, loss, and memory. In 2014 he received a B.A. in New Media Arts with a minor in Architecture from Southern Polytechnic State University (now Kennesaw State University) in Marietta, Georgia. In 2016 he received an M.F.A. in Fine Arts from The School of Visual Arts in New York City and completed a residency at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Touré has also completed residencies at the Franconia Sculpture Park (2018) in Shafer, Minnesota and SVA MFA Fine Arts’s Life on an Island on Governors Island, New York (2019). Since 2015, Toure has consistently been included in group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. His work has been featured in solo exhibitions at The AC Institute in New York, New York (2018), and haul gallery in Brooklyn, New York (2019). In 2020 Touré participated in the group show A Muffled Sound Underwater at LatchKey Gallery and was awarded both a Black Artist Fund grant and the Peter S. Reed Foundation grant for Mixed Media/Sculpture.
